Fantine Liu looks a bit different from her other fourth-grade classmates. Her skin is dark-colored, and her hair curly. She tries to make friends, but none of her fellow students seem to show acceptance towards her. Fantines mother is a Filipina, who is distressed due to her husbands debts and the tense relationship between her mother-in-law and she. One day, Fantines mother brought her along to make a confession in a Church in Taipei. In the church, Fantine met a Filipino boy called Jason. Fantine can only speak Mandarin Chinese, and Jason Tagalog (Philippine Language), and yet it was Jason who opened Fantines eyes to Taiwan, this foreign homeland of hers, and the loving spirit of a real Filipina.
